Hi there friends,
Thank you for signing up for my email list! Or thank you for your patience as I took your offhanded “yes, that sounds like a good idea” comment as direct permission to add you. Unsubscribe at the bottom.
I’m excited to pop into your inbox with color related points of interest. I need some salve on my frenzied heart and maybe you feel the same; January’s pile of misfortunate things seems to fit in shorter and shorter headlines that mentally plunk me down in the middle of a digital gladiatorial arena. This is my attempt at taking off the conscripted armor and getting the smell of blood out of my nostrils.

Clean Slate is premiering February 6th on Amazon! Peep the trailer. I am so excited for this show to see the light of day, beautifully shot by Sandra Valde-Hansen ASC, LPS. The look is warm, and like a postcard from an old friend you don’t talk to often but when you do you pick up right where you left off. And so damn important right now – the amount of tomfoolery my trans family and friends have to contend with is just ridiculous and absolutely designed to keep us distracted and depleted, can a girl just feel good about her gay-ass family?? Working on this show made me feel that way and I hope it makes you feel that way too. Bookmark it on Amazon.
Subtractive:
I went to a friend’s for breakfast with my family a couple weeks ago with my paint bag in tow, completely convinced I would do nothing interesting or valuable while there because it has been a big ol’ minute since my palette saw the light of day. I was half-assedly setting myself up but after about forty minutes, I remembered I do in fact know how to do this. Even if the world gets blowed-up tomorrow in a very particular way that causes all paint somehow to cease existing, whatever set of observational skills I have developed from painting and studying color took twenty years to develop and those skills? They won’t get blowed-up. Anyway, I took it as a reminder: experience and curiosity transcend medium and it inspired me to look at some old work, which I put up for sale for cheap in my painting shop. And I have painted three times since then, so it’s working getting my gears turning again!

Color has been my weird little way to explore the world and I hope by sharing some of mine, it might make room for you to share some of yours. I don’t want to scroll for validation right now; I want to reach out for connection. Which is maybe too vulnerable and weird – I definitely feel like I stripped past the gladiator outfit and just took my shirt off in front of you. But I think I’d rather look a little silly in front of 50 people while sharing what’s good and meaningful in my life than just completely unplug and write off the idea that it’s worthwhile to share with people. We may not know what the entertainment will look like in three months, but I do know the only reason I do this dumb job is for the opportunity to connect and grow and cheer on other working artists and technicians.
So there. Shirt off. Rory out.
